TheAnatilii were aGallic tribe dwelling in theAlpilles region during theIron Age.
The Anatilii are recorded byPliny (1st c. AD), who gives their name in the Latingenitive case (Anatiliorum).[1][2] Their name may be related toGaulishanatia, meaning 'souls'.[3]
Pliny mentions aregio Anatiliorum situated between theCampi lapidei (theCrau) and the territories ofDexivates (between theDurance andLuberon) andCavari (around present-dayAvignon andCavaillon).[4] Their territory was located north ofLibicii andAvatici, east of theVolcae Arecomici.[5] According to historianGuy Barruol, they were part of theSaluvian confederation.[6]
Anoppidum withLatin Rights given by Pliny asAnatilia has been linked to the site ofVernègues, nearSalon-de-Provence.[7][8]
