Ananya Chatterjee is an Indian actress who works inBengali films.[3] Known for her role inAbahoman which won her aNational Award.[4] She started her career as a TV actress. She acted in several TV serials and films, including three directed by Anjan Dutt. Her role as the muse of a married director inAbahoman, directed byRituparno Ghosh, won her theNational Film Award for Best Actress.[5]

Early life and education

Brought up in Kolkata, Chatterjee underwent education atG. D. Birla Centre and passed Class 10 board exams in 1994. Chatterjee studied microbiology atJogamaya Devi College, an affiliated undergraduate women's college of theUniversity of Calcutta.[6]

Career

Chatterjee was a student inMamata Shankar's dance institution, when she started her acting career on television, with the TV seriesDin Pratidin where she acted oppositeRudranil Ghosh, and went to on appear on soap operas likeTithir Atithi,Aleya, andAnanya.[6] Despite having no formal training in acting, her work was appreciated and she became a household name;[6] soon appearing in three telefilms directed byAnjan Dutt,John Johnny Janardan,Ek Din Darjeeling andAmar Baba.[7] Subsequently, she made her feature film debut with Sharan Dutta's thrillerRaat Barota Paanch (2005).[5] After appearing in the comedyAamra (2006) byMainak Bhaumik, her next important film was debutant directorAgnidev Chatterjee's,Probhu Nashto Hoye Jai (Lord, Let the Devil Steal My Soul), which premiered at the 13thKolkata Film Festival.[8]

In 2009, appearing opposite veteranSoumitra Chatterjee in Suman Ghosh'sDwando she managed to stand her ground and then in Anup Sengupta'sMama Bhagne (2009) where again her performance was reviewed as "stellar".[9][10] However, it was in Rituparno Ghosh'sAbohoman, released in 2010, that established her as an actress of repute,[11] winning her firstNational Film Award for Best Actress. In the 2012 Bengali filmMeghe Dhaka Tara directed byKamaleswar Mukherjee, Chatterjee played the role of Durga, wife of Nilkantha Bagchi.[12]

She performed the lead role in the popular Bengali serialSubarnolata airing onZee Bangla.[13]
