Career

[edit]

Astrophysics

[edit]

Siraj earned bachelor's and master's degrees atHarvard University,[5] and is currently pursuing his PhD atPrinceton University.[6]

His research is primarily focused oninterstellar objects,[7][8]asteroids andcomets,[9][10]planetary system formation and evolution,[11][12]supernovae,[13]black holes,[14]dark matter,[15] and the search for life in the universe.[16] Recently, he proposed the existence of unseen captured planets in theouter Solar System.[17][18][19][20] He co-discoveredCNEOS 2014-01-08,[21][22][23] a potentially interstellar meteor.[24][25][26][27][28][29] Siraj is also known as the former director of interstellar object studies at the Galileo project, through which he was involved with the search and discovery mission forinterstellar objects.[22] His research was named one ofCNN's extraordinary cosmic revelations and moments in space exploration in 2022.[30] He was the youngest scientist named to theForbes 30 Under 30 list in 2021,[1] andAstronomy magazine named him a rising star in astronomy in 2022.[31] He also contributes toScientific American.[32]

Music

[edit]

An active concertpianist,[33] Siraj is a YoungSteinway Artist[34] andUS Presidential Scholar in the Arts.[2] He graduated from theNew England Conservatory of Music with a master's degree in 2023.[35] He has performed withYo-Yo Ma atUNESCO and theUnited Nations General Assembly.[36][37][38] He played at theAtlantic Council'sGlobal Citizen Awards forJustin Trudeau,[39] as well as at theGRAMMY Salute to Classical Music atCarnegie Hall,[40] atThe Cliburn[41] and at the opening concert for the Swiss Alps Classics.[42]

At theAspen Center for Physics, he moderated a panel discussion that brought topcomposers andphysicists together in conversation.[43] In partnership with theNational Park Foundation andFrom the Top, he established Music For The Parks.[44][45]
