Theaminopenicillins are members of thepenicillin family that arestructural analogs ofampicillin (which is the 2-amino derivative ofbenzylpenicillin, hence the name).[1] Like other penicillins andbeta-lactam antibiotics, they contain abeta-lactam ring that is crucial to its antibacterial activity.[citation needed]
In the aminopenicillins the amino group is protonated to give the ammonium derivative, which enhances their uptake through bacterialporin channels. This does not, however, preventresistance conferred by bacterialbeta-lactamases.[2] Members of this family includeampicillin, amoxicillin andbacampicillin.[3]
