American Canyon (previously known asNapa Junction[6]) is a city in southernNapa County, California, United States, 35 miles (55 km) northeast ofSan Francisco, part of theSan Francisco Bay Area. The2020 census reported the city's population as 21,837.[7] Its ZIP Code is 94503, and its area code is 707. It is in the Pacific Time time zone and observes Daylight-Saving Time. The city was incorporated in 1992.

Geography

American Canyon is bounded geographically by theNapa River to the west, the foothills of theSulfur Springs Mountains to the east,Vallejo andSolano County to the south and vineyards and theNapa County Airport (IATA airport code APC) to the north. American Canyon Creek, a tributary of theNapa River, runs through the city.

According to theUnited States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12 km2), of which 99.83% is land and 0.17% is water.

The unincorporated community ofNapa Junction is adjacent to the city.

On August 24, 2014, at 3:20 a.m., the area was struck by amagnitude 6.0 earthquake centered 3.7 miles (6.0 km) northwest of the city.[8][9]

Climate

This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22 °C). According to theKöppen Climate Classification system, American Canyon has awarm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[10]

Demographics

American Canyon is the second most populous city in Napa County, after the City ofNapa.

The2020 United States census reported that American Canyon had a population of 21,837. The population density was 3,588.1 inhabitants per square mile (1,385.4/km2). The racial makeup of American Canyon was 24.3%White, 6.8%African American, 1.0%Native American, 35.6%Asian, 0.7%Pacific Islander, 17.1% fromother races, and 14.4% from two or more races.Hispanic or Latino of any race were 30.7% of the population.[11]

The census reported that 99.7% of the population lived in households and 0.3% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters.[11]

There were 6,192 households, out of which 46.4% included children under the age of 18, 60.7% were married-couple households, 5.3% werecohabiting couple households, 21.7% had a female householder with no partner present, and 12.3% had a male householder with no partner present. 12.8% of households were one person, and 6.2% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 3.51.[11] There were 5,091families (82.2% of all households).[12]

The age distribution was 24.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% aged 18 to 24, 24.6% aged 25 to 44, 27.6% aged 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.0 males.[11]

There were 6,334 housing units at an average density of 1,040.7 units per square mile (401.8 units/km2), of which 6,192 (97.8%) were occupied. Of these, 74.9% were owner-occupied, and 25.1% were occupied by renters.[11]

In 2023, the US Census Bureau estimated that 31.1% of the population were foreign-born. Of all people aged 5 or older, 56.7% spoke only English at home, 21.8% spokeSpanish, 3.1% spoke otherIndo-European languages, 18.0% spoke Asian or Pacific Islander languages, and 0.4% spoke other languages. Of those aged 25 or older, 83.7% were high school graduates and 32.7% had a bachelor's degree.[14]

The median household income was $123,935, and theper capita income was $43,301. About 7.4% of families and 7.5% of the population were below the poverty line.[15]

Government

The mayor of American Canyon is popularly elected to a four-year term. The current mayor is Pierre Washington. City Council members are elected to four-year terms, and select one of their members to serve as vice mayor. The other current City Council members are Mark Joseph, Melissa Lamattina, David Oro, and Brando Cruz.[18] Pierre Washington is serving his first term as mayor, and Mark Joseph is the vice mayor.

In theCalifornia State Legislature, American Canyon is inthe 3rd senatorial district, represented byDemocrat Christopher Cabaldon,[19] and inthe 4th Assembly district, represented byDemocrat Cecilia Aguiar-Curry.[20]

In theUnited States House of Representatives, American Canyon is inCalifornia's 4th congressional district, represented byDemocrat Mike Thompson.[21]
