In the2006 state assembly elections,[5]Abdus Sattar ofCPI (M) won the Amdanga assembly seat, defeating his nearest rivalRafiqur Rahaman ofTrinamool Congress. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned.Hashim Abdul Halim of CPI (M) defeatedDr. M. Nuruzzaman of Trinamool Congress in 2001,[6] Muhammad Rafiqul Islam ofCongress in 1996,[7]Idris Ali of Congress in 1991,[8] Asoke Krishna Dutt of Congress in 1987,[9] C.F.Ali ofIUML in 1982,[10] and Mira Dutta ofJanata Party in 1977.[11][12] Prior to that the constituency did not exist.
