Amatique Bay is a largebay in theGulf of Honduras, along the eastern coast ofGuatemala andBelize. It stretches fromSanto Tomás de Castilla in the south toPunta Gorda in the north, where it opens to theCaribbean Sea. Its south-eastern limits are marked by a smallpeninsula known asPunta de Manabique where a $27 million gas terminal is planned[1]
Most of the bay is part ofGuatemala, while the northwestern portion is part ofBelize.[2] The bay receives the runoff from three major rivers: theMoho River in Belize, theSarstoon River forming the border between Belize and Guatemala, andDulce River in Guatemala. The main ports in the bay arePuerto Barrios,Santo Tomás de Castilla andLivingston (Guatemala), andPunta Gorda (Belize).
