Amaliada (Greek:Αμαλιάδα,Katharevousa: Ἀμαλιάς,Amaliás) is a town and a formermunicipality in northwesternElis,West Greece,Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipalityIlida, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit.[2] The municipal unit has an area of 251.945 km2.[3] It is near the archaeological site ofElis, thecity-state whose territory was the site of the ancientOlympic Games. It is situated in the plains of Elis, 6 km from theIonian Sea. It is 10 km southeast ofGastouni, 16 km northwest ofPyrgos and 60 km southwest ofPatras.
Amaliada was named afterQueen Amalia of Greece in the 1830s, and formed by merging two communes, Kalitsa and Dervitselepi. It features a city square with pine trees and a fountain. Most of the streets are in grid order running almost due north, south, east, and west. On the east side, Amaliada has a public sports stadium (mainly used for soccer). The hospital and the monastery ofFrangavilla are in the southeast. Amaliada has a train station on the line from Patras to Pyrgos. A street in Amaliada's west side is named Hiroshima in memory of the victims ofthe nuclear destruction of Hiroshima at the end ofWorld War II. Kourouta and Palouki are the beaches of Amaliada, about 6 km southwest of the town centre.
