Alson Skinner Clark (March 25, 1876 – March 23, 1949) was anAmerican Impressionist painter best remembered for hislandscapes. He was also a photographer,plein aire painter, art educator and muralist.

Early life and education

On March 25, 1876, he was born inChicago,Illinois to a wealthy family.[1] He showed early artistic talent and by age 11 he was taking art classes atArt Institute of Chicago.[2] His art education included training at theAcadémie Julian (1899).[2] In addition he studied in the atelier ofWilliam Merritt Chase andChase School of Art andAcadémie Carmen withJames McNeill Whistler.[3][when?]

Career

He spent much of his early career working inParis,France and served in theUnited States Army as an aerial photographer duringWorld War I.[1] In the 1920s, he taught fine art atOccidental College, and by 1919 he was director of theStickney Memorial Art School in Pasadena.[2][3]

His memberships in arts organizations included thePasadena Society of Artists and theCalifornia Art Club.[4] His work was included in theTonal Impressionism exhibition curated by Harry Muir Kurtzworth in 1937, along with the works ofFrank Tenney Johnson,Frank Tolles Chamberlain, andTheodore Lukits which was held in the Los Angeles Art Association Gallery at the Los Angeles Public Library.

Murals

In addition to landscape paintings, he paintedmurals for theCarthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles, and the fire curtain of thePasadena Playhouse, depicting a Spanish galleon in full sail.

A group of murals completed in 1929 can still be seen at the former 1st Trust & Savings Bank at 587 East Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California. The murals consist of four panels standing approximately ten feet in height, each depicting a major southern California industry:oil drilling,citrus farming, themovies, andshipping.[5]

Personal life

In 1898, he traveled to France and, in 1902, returned to the United States. In 1920, he married Atta Medora McMullin (1881–1962).[1] Immediately after, he and his wife moved to theArroyo Seco area inPasadena, California.[1]

On March 23, 1949, he died while painting in his studio inPasadena, California. He was 72 years old.[1]
