
Alphitomancy (fromGreek:ἄλφιτον,romanized: alphiton,lit. 'barley', andμαντεία,manteia,'divination') is a form ofdivination involvingbarley cakes or loaves of barley bread.[1]
When someone in a group was suspected of acrime, the members of the group would be fedbarley cakes or slices ofbarley bread. Supposedly, the guilty party would getindigestion, while all others would feel well.[2]
