Alonso Jorge Solís Calderón (born October 14, 1978) is aCosta Rican retiredfootballer and singer who played for Saprissa asattacking midfielder orstriker.
Known asEl Mariachi, Solís made his professional debut forSaprissa on 28 January 1996 againstMunicipal Pérez Zeledón and scored his first goal on 13 April 1997 againstCarmelita.[3]
He then spent a good deal of time abroad, withUniversidad Católica in Chile,[4]OFI in Greece,[5] andSK Brann[6] in Norway.
Solís had an awe-inspiring 2003/4 season with Saprissa, finishing third in the league in goals with 17 while leading Saprissa to an easy first-place finish in the league. WithSaprissa, he has won four national championships and aCONCACAF Champions Cup, and was part of the team that played the2005 FIFA Club World Championship, whereSaprissa finished third behindSão Paulo andLiverpool. His club career was a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport.
Due to his performance, at the end of the last season, he received many offers from clubs in Mexico, Brazil, and even in Costa Rica, but he decided to stay inSaprissa. Due toWalter Gaitán's injury, Solis was loaned to Necaxa[7] for 3 months, starting on March 17, 2008. The Mexicans could not offer him a contract due to the foreign player quota.[8] He was one of the most loved and claimed by the crowd while he played atDeportivo Saprissa.[9] In his final game with Saprissa, visiting archrivalLiga Deportiva Alajuelense, Solis scored an excellent goal, which gave them the 0–1 win, Saprissa's 9th consecutive win in the 2008 Clausura Championship. He ended up playing 292 league games for Saprissa, scoring 98 goals.[10]
In January 2012, Solís was signed byBengal Premier League side Durgapur[11] only to discover the league was postponed and eventually cancelled.[12]
In November 2012, he was cleared to play for LINAFA outfit San Francisco de Dos Ríos,[13] after having officially retired[14] In August 2013, Solís made his debut as player-manager[15] for second division sideGeneración Saprissa, Saprissa's reserve team.[16]
At junior level, he played in the1995 FIFA U-17 World Championship held inEcuador, and the1997 FIFA World Youth Championship held inMalaysia.[17]
Solís made his debut forCosta Rica in a May 1999friendly match againstChile and earned a total of 48 caps, scoring eight goals.[18] He represented his country in 18FIFA World Cup qualification matches[17] and played at the2003,[19]2005,[20] and2007 UNCAF Nations Cup,[21] as well as at the2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup[22] and the2004 Copa América.[23]
Alonso Solís's final international match was an October 2008FIFA World Cup qualification game against theHaiti.[24] This match marked the end of his illustrious career withCosta Rica.[25]
