Alison Oliver (born 3 June 1997[1]) is an Irish actress. She is known for her debut role as Frances in theBBC Three andHulu miniseriesConversations with Friends (2022),[2][3] and she was named inVariety's "10 actors to watch" in 2023.[4]
Alison Oliver was born inBallintemple, Cork before moving toBlackrock when she was young. Her mother is a social worker and her father worked in the motor trade. She attendedScoil Mhuire, a private school in Cork, and took drama, singing and dancing lessons at The Performer's Academy and the Cork School of Dance. She applied toTrinity College Dublin's drama schoolThe Lir Academy, but was invited to take a year-long foundation course in Acting and Theatre first. She auditioned again after completing the course,[2][5] going on to graduate with aBachelor of Arts in acting in 2020.[6]
Oliver landed her debut television role as Frances Flynn inConversations with Friends, a miniseries adaptation ofSally Rooney's2017 debut novel of the same name developed byElement Pictures forBBC Three andHulu. She received the news that she had been cast inConversations with Friends the morning after graduating from drama school.[7] In 2023, she appeared in theBBC One drama miniseriesBest Interests.[8]
She made her London stage debut inWomen, Beware the Devil at theAlmeida Theatre in February 2023,[9] and in April 2023 starred inDancing at Lughnasa at theNational Theatre.
Oliver made her feature film debut inSaltburn, written and directed byEmerald Fennell.[10] The film premiered at the50th Telluride Film Festival and went on to be nominated for twoGolden Globes and fiveBAFTA Film Awards. In 2024, she played a supporting role inJustin Kurzel's filmThe Order, which premiered at the81st Venice International Film Festival. In November 2024, it was announced that she had been cast as Isabella Linton in Emerald Fennell's next film,Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of thenovel of the same name.[11]
Oliver is a vegetarian.[12] In 2022, she was in a relationship with Irish actorÉanna Hardwicke.[13] As of 2025, she is dating English actorJosh O'Connor.[14][15] Since 2022, Oliver has mostly resided in London.[12][15]
In September 2025, Oliver signed an open pledge withFilm Workers for Palestine pledging not to work with Israeli film institutions "that are implicated ingenocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people."[16]
