Alican Önlü (born 27 December 1967,Nazimye,Turkey) is a Turkish politician ofKurdish origin of thePeoples Democratic Party (HDP) and a member of theGrand National Assembly of Turkey. Throughout his political career he was a politician in a variety of parties such as theDemocracy Party (DEP) and theDemocratic Society Party (DTP).[1]
Önlü is a Kurdish politician of theAlevi faith[2] and has been active in several political parties. Beginning with thePeople's Labour Party (HEP) he later joined the DEP, thePeople's Labor Party (HEP), thePeople's Democracy Party (HADEP), then theDemocratic Society Party (DTP) and theDemocratic Regions Party (DBP) before he joined the HDP.[1] He was active in the Istanbul branch for the HADEP and theDemocratic People's Party (DEHAP) in Tunceli.[3] In theparliamentary elections of June 2015 Önlü was elected to theGrand National Assembly of Turkey, representingTunceli for thePeoples Democratic Party (HDP).[4] He was reelected in thesnap elections ofNovember 2015[5] and also inJune 2018.[6]
He was arrested in December 2016[1] and accused of being involved in theKurdistan Communities Union (KCK) which Turkey sees as an extension of theKurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).[7] He was released in March 2017 pending trial.[1] In a separate case, he was sentenced to one year and six months imprisonment for spreading propaganda for the PKK on terror related charges in February 2019.[8] The KCK case was treated as part of the KCK mail trail and as of September 2019, the case was still ongoing.[9] On the 17 March 2021, the State Prosecutor before theCourt of Cassation of TurkeyBekir Şahin filed a lawsuit before theConstitutional Court demanding for Önlü and 686 other HDP politicians a five-year ban to engage in politics.[10] The lawsuit was filed jointly with a request for a closure of the HDP due to the parties alleged organizational links with the PKK.[11][10]
He is married and the father of two children.[12]
