Ali: An American Hero is an Americantelevision film which aired on August 31, 2000, onFox. It chronicles portions of the career ofheavyweightboxerMuhammad Ali, who is portrayed byDavid Ramsey.[1]
Cassius Clay (David Ramsey), winner of thegold medal forboxing in thelight heavyweight division at the1960 Summer Olympics, rises in the professional ranks and defeatsheavyweight boxing championSonny Liston in a stunning upset to capture the title in 1964. Controversy surrounds his decision to join theNation of Islam, his name change from Cassius Clay toMuhammad Ali, his friendship withMalcolm X (Joe Morton), and hisconscientious objection to thedraft during theVietnam War. Stripped of his title, he eventually recaptures it in 1974 in the so-called "Rumble in the Jungle"—an epic bout againstGeorge Foreman inZaire.
Ali: An American Hero was released on DVD on January 27, 2004.
