Alexios Kaballarios orKaballares (Ancient Greek:Ἀλέξιος Καβαλλάριος/Καβαλλάρης) was aByzantine aristocrat and military commander, cousin of EmperorMichael VIII Palaiologos (r. 1259–1282).[1]
He participated in the Byzantine campaigns in theMorea in the early 1260s, and was taken prisoner byWilliam II of Villehardouin after theBattle of Makryplagi (1263/64).[2]
Apparently released at some later date, inc. 1270, he held the offices ofdomestikos tes trapezes and governor inThessaly orThessalonica.[1][3]
Along with his cousin, thedespotesJohn Palaiologos, he led a Byzantine army againstJohn I Doukas ofThessaly, but was defeated and killed in theBattle of Neopatras inc. 1273/74.[1][4]
