Princess Alexandra of Hannover (néePrincess Alexandra Sophie Cecilie Anna Maria Friederike Benigna Dorothea of Ysenburg and Büdingen; 23 October 1937 – 1 June 2015) was a German politician, philanthropist, and wife of Prince Welf Henry of Hanover. Hannover lastly served as a councilwoman representing theNiederrad district of Frankfurt on the Frankfurt City Council (German:Frankfurter Stadtverordnetenversammlung).[1][2] She was a member of theChristian Democratic Union political party.[1][2]
Alexandra Prinzessin von Hannover was born on 23 October 1937 inFrankfurt am Main[1] and was the second eldest child and only daughter ofOtto Friedrich III [de], Prince ofYsenburg und Büdingen zu Wächtersbach and his wifeFelicitas Anna Eleonore Cecilie, PrincessReuss of Köstritz.[citation needed] She was the sister ofWolfgang-Ernst, Prince of Ysenburg and Büdingen.
Alexandra married PrinceWelf Henry of Hanover [fr], the fourth son ofErnest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick and his wifePrincess Victoria Louise of Prussia, in a civil ceremony on 20 September 1960 atBüdingen,Hesse, and in a religious ceremony on the following day at the Marienkirche in Büdingen.[citation needed] The couple had no children.
She was the aunt ofQueen Sofía of Spain andKing Constantine II of Greece, and grandaunt ofKing Felipe VI of Spain. She died on 1 June 2015, aged 77, three days before the death of her sister-in-lawMonika, Dowager Princess of Hanover.[3]
Alexandra represented the Frankfurt district of Niederrad[1][2] on theFrankfurt City Council since 1980.[1][2] She lastly served as the Chairwoman of the Culture and Leisure Committee.[1][2]
