Alexander Charles Garrett (November 4, 1832 — February 18, 1924) was abishop ofThe Episcopal Church in theUnited States.
Born inBallymote,County Sligo,Ireland, he graduated fromTrinity College, Dublin with aBachelor of Arts in 1855. He was ordained deacon on July 6, 1856, and priest on July 5, 1857, in the chapel ofFarnham Castle. He then served as curate ofEast Worldham,Hampshire inEngland, until 1859. In 1859 he left forBritish Columbia inCanada to serve as missionary, chaplain at the naval station atEsquimalt, rector of St Paul's Church inNanaimo, and minister to the gold miners atCariboo.
In 1870 he moved to theUnited States and becamerector of St James's Church inSan Francisco, and in 1872Dean ofTrinity Cathedral inOmaha. In 1874 he was appointedMissionary Bishop of Northern Texas and retained the seat after the formation of theEpiscopal Diocese of Dallas on December 20, 1895. He was consecrated bishop on December 20, 1874, by BishopRobert Harper Clarkson of Nebraska inTrinity Cathedral,Omaha. he was instrumental in the building ofSt Matthew's Cathedral inDallas, Texas. He also founded St. Mary's College for women in Dallas.
On the death ofDaniel Sylvester Tuttle on April 17, 1923, Garrett becamepresiding bishop. At that time he was 91 years old and totally blind. He remained Bishop of Dallas and Presiding Bishop until his death in 1924.[1]
