Alexander (Alec) BoksenbergCBEFRS (born 18 March 1936)[1] is a British scientist who was theDirector of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1981–1995. In the early 1980s he developed theimage photon counting system, an electronic detector for faint astronomical sources.[2] His astronomical research focused onactive galactic nuclei.
Boksenberg won the 1998Jackson-Gwilt Medal from theRoyal Astronomical Society[3] and the 1999Hughes Medal from theRoyal Society.[4] The minor planet3205 Boksenberg is named after him.[5]
He won theRichard Glazebrook Medal and Prize in 2000.[citation needed]
