Alexander Robert Ballinger[1] is a BritishLabour Party politician who has been theMember of Parliament forHalesowen since2024. He gained the seat fromJames Morris, aConservative.[2]

Career

Ballinger served as aRoyal Marine officer from 2005 to 2013, retiring with the rank ofCaptain,[3][4][5] and previously worked in the Middle East for theDepartment for International Development as an aid worker.[6] He then worked in Pakistan for theForeign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) as adiplomat.[7][8]

Most recently, Ballinger was the CEO of a mental health charity[9] based in Birmingham and the Black Country, leaving the role in 2024.[6]

Parliamentary career

Ballinger voted against an amendment to the King's Speech that would have removed the formerConservative Government's policy of a two-child benefit cap.[10] It was widely reported that Labour MPs who did not vote with the government would have the whip removed and be forced to sit asindependents.[11]

Ballinger voted to means test theWinter Fuel Payment for pensioners[12]

In November 2024, Ballinger voted in favour of theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legaliseassisted suicide.[13]
