Alexandros Emeka Antetokounmpo[a] (bornAdetokunbo;[b] 27 August 2001) is a Nigerian–Greek professionalbasketball player for theMilwaukee Bucks of theNational Basketball Association (NBA), on atwo-way contract with theWisconsin Herd of theNBA G League. He is the youngest brother of basketball playersGiannis,Thanasis, andKostas.

Early life

Antetokounmpo was born inSepolia, a neighbourhood inAthens, Greece. He is the son of Greek parents, Veronica and Charles Antetokounmpo. He has a Greek passport, which was granted to him in June 2013, so that he could gain avisa, and be allowed to legally enter into theUnited States.[1] He received the Greek citizenship in September 2021, alongside his mother.[2] He started playing basketball at age nine,[3] and in sixth grade, moved with his family toCudahy, Wisconsin, near where his older brother Giannis was practicing for his rookie season for theMilwaukee Bucks of the (NBA)National Basketball Association. Before high school he moved toRiver Hills, Wisconsin. He attended Dominican High School inWhitefish Bay, Wisconsin.[4]

High school career

Antetokounmpo played basketball forDominican High School in Whitefish Bay for four years. As a freshman, he averaged 2.9 points per game, and grew about 12 cm (five inches) to 2.03 m (6 ft 8 in) by the time he was a sophomore.[4] Antetokounmpo was a two-time all-state selection and averaged 20 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior. He received scholarship offers fromDePaul,Ohio andGreen Bay.[5] On 9 May 2020, Antetokounmpo announced that he would play in Europe after graduating from high school, rather than playingcollege basketball. He was considered a three-starrecruit by major recruiting services.[6]

Professional career

UCAM Murcia (2020–2021)

On 22 June 2020, Antetokounmpo signed a three-year contract withUCAM Murcia of theLiga ACB.[7] On 18 October, he made his debut for the club'sreserve team in theLiga EBA, recording 28 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-of-9 from three-point range, in an 83–69 win over SCD Carolinas.[8]

Raptors 905 (2021–2022)

After going undrafted in the2021 NBA draft, Antetokounmpo joined theSacramento Kings for the2021 NBA Summer League.[9] TheSacramento Kings then proceeded to win the2021 NBA Summer League. On 14 October 2021, Antetokounmpo was signed to an Exhibit 10 contract by theToronto Raptors.[10] However, he was waived the following day to join theRaptors 905 as an affiliate player.[11]

Wisconsin Herd (2022–2024)

On 3 November 2022, Antetokounmpo was named to the opening night roster for theWisconsin Herd in theNBA G League.[12]

On 31 August 2023, Antetokounmpo signed with theMilwaukee Bucks, but was waived the same day[13] and on 30 October, he rejoined Wisconsin.[14][15] On 8 February 2024, he was waived by the Herd.[16]

Mažeikiai (2024)

On 13 February 2024, Antetokounmpo signed withM Basket-Delamode Mažeikiai of theLithuanian Basketball League.[17]

Podgorica (2024)

In August 2024, Antetokounmpo signed withPodgorica of thePrva A Liga and theABA League 2,[18] eventually playing only five games for the Montenegrin club.[19]

PAOK (2024–2025)

On October 22, 2024, Antetokounmpo signed withPAOK of theGreek Basketball League.[20] On July 31, 2025, he renewed his contract with theFIBA Europe Cup finalists. On August 13 of the same year, however, he requested to be released from the club.

Aris (2025)

On August 15, 2025, Antetokounmpo signed a two-year deal withAris. However, he appeared in only two official games with the historic club.

Milwaukee Bucks / Wisconsin Herd (2025–present)

On October 13, 2025, Antetokounmpo signed a two-way contract with theMilwaukee Bucks, marking the first time inNBA franchise history that three brothers —Giannis,Thanasis, and Alex— played on the same team.[21]

Personal life

Three of his older brothers,Giannis,Thanasis andKostas, play basketball professionally, and all three have won NBA championships. Giannis was namedNBA Most Valuable Player in both 2019 and 2020. Thanasis and Giannis won the NBA championship in 2021 with theMilwaukee Bucks, where Giannis was also namedFinals MVP. Kostas last played for theChicago Bulls and won an NBA title with theLos Angeles Lakers in 2020.

In 2025, Alex joined theMilwaukee Bucks on a two-way contract, becoming teammates with Giannis and Thanasis.[22]

Antetokounmpo's father, Charles, and his oldest brother, Francis, playedsoccer in Nigeria. His mother, Veronica, was ahigh jumper.[23]

In September 2021, Alex and his mother were granted honoraryGreek citizenship by thePrime Minister of Greece,Kyriakos Mitsotakis.[24]

Alex, hockey playerFilip Forsberg, and three of his older brothers — Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas — were also announced as part of theNashville SC ownership group inMLS.[25]
