Aleix Vidal Parreu (Catalan pronunciation:[əˈleʒβiˈðal];[a] born 21 August 1989) is a Spanish professionalfootballer. Mainly aright winger and a player of great speed, he can also operate as aright-back.[3][4]

Having spent his early career at a string of lower-league and reserve teams, he became a regular atAlmería, helping them to promotion toLa Liga, and also won theEuropa League withSevilla before signing forBarcelona in 2015 for €17 million. Three seasons later, he returned to Sevilla.

Vidal won onecap forSpain, in 2015.

Club career

Early years

Born inValls,Tarragona,Catalonia, and raised in neighbouringPuigpelat,[5] Vidal started his career as aforward. He signed forRCD Espanyol in 2007 to further his development[6][7] after having already made his senior debut withCF Reus Deportiu,[8] but never appeared for the former's first team, finishing his only senior season with the club on loan toPanthrakikos F.C. from Greece.

On 31 August 2009, Vidal moved toSegunda División sideGimnàstic de Tarragona,[9] but spent the vast majority ofthe season withCF Pobla de Mafumet, thefarm team. He joinedRCD Mallorca in the middle of 2010, being assigned tothe reserves in theSegunda División B.[10]

Almería

In mid-June 2011, aftersuffering relegation, Vidal joined anotherreserve team also in that tier,UD Almería B.[11] He made his debut for theAndalusians'main squad on 27 August 2011, againstCórdoba CF.[12] Shortly after, he was promoted to the first team and received the No. 8 jersey following the departure ofAlbert Crusat toWigan Athletic.[13]

In hissecond season, Vidal scored four goals in 37 games – 30 starts, nearly 2,600 minutes of action – helping to a return toLa Liga after two years. On 6 August 2013, he renewed his link with Almería until 2017,[14] making his top-flight debut on 19 August by starting in a 2–3 home loss toVillarreal CF,[15] and scored his first goal roughly a month later, in a 4–2 defeat atAtlético Madrid.[16]

Sevilla

On 16 June 2014, Vidal signed withSevilla FC for a3 million fee, penning a four-year contract.[17] He made his competitive debut on 12 August in the2014 UEFA Super Cup at theCardiff City Stadium, playing 66 minutes before beingsubstituted for fellow debutantIago Aspas in a 2–0 loss toReal Madrid.[18] He found the net on his league debut 11 days later, opening the 1–1 home draw againstValencia CF.[19]

On 7 May 2015, in a game in which he featured asright-back untilCoke entered the field in the 58th minute – he was often used by managerUnai Emery in that position duringthe campaign[20][21]– Vidal scored twice and also provided anassist toKevin Gameiro, in a 3–0 home win overACF Fiorentina inthe semi-finals of theUEFA Europa League.[22] He started inthe final 20 days later, a 3–2 defeat ofFC Dnipro inWarsaw.[23]

Barcelona

On 7 June 2015, Vidal signed a five-year contract withFC Barcelona, for an18 million fee plus four in add-ons.[24][25] He underwent a medical on the following day, being also officially presented.[26] Due to an embargo placed on the club byFIFA for breaking rules on signing under-age foreign players, he was not permitted to appear in competitive games until January 2016.[27]

Vidal made his official debut for theBlaugrana on 6 January 2016, replacingDani Alves midway through the second half of a 4–1 home victory against former club Espanyol in theround of 16 of theCopa del Rey.[28] Subsequently, he was completely ostracised by managerLuis Enrique.[29][30][31]

On 14 January 2017, profiting from the absence of habitual starting right-backSergi Roberto, Vidal opened his league account for Barcelona, contributing to a 5–0 rout ofUD Las Palmas at theCamp Nou.[32] On 11 February, in the last minutes of a 6–0 away win againstDeportivo Alavés, he dislocated his ankle following a challenge byThéo Hernandez, being ruled out for the rest ofthe season.[33]

Return to Sevilla

On 4 August 2018, Vidal returned to Sevilla for a fee of €8.5 million plus 2 million in variables.[34] However, he struggled to settle in the first team, being also deemed surplus to requirements by new managerJulen Lopetegui in July 2019.[35]

On 28 July 2019, Vidal was loaned out to fellow top-tier club Alavés in aseason-long deal.[36] On 1 July 2021, he and Sevilla parted ways by mutual consent.[37]

Espanyol

Vidal returned to Espanyol on 18 August 2021, after agreeing to a two-year contract.[38]

International career

Vidal made his debut forCatalonia on 30 December 2013, playing the second half of a 4–1 win overCape Verde at theEstadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.[39] On 26 May 2015, he and Sevilla teammateSergio Rico were the two players called up to theSpanish national team for the first time, ahead of a friendly againstCosta Rica and aUEFA Euro 2016qualifying match againstBelarus.[40] He made his debut in the 2–1 victory against the former at theEstadio Reino de León, playing the entire first half before being substituted for his former Sevilla partnerVitolo.[41]
