Alcala, officially theMunicipality of Alcala, is a municipality in the province ofCagayan, Philippines. According to the2024 census, it has a population of41,468 people.

Alcala is the birthplace ofSenator Melecio Arranz, who represented the1st Senatorial District of the Philippines. The municipality is also home to theSaint Philomene Church, noted as thewidest church in the Cagayan Valley.

History

TheIbanag people, an indigenous group, were the first settlers of what is nowAlcala. They originally called the areaFulay, meaning “red,” in reference to the distinctive color of its soil. After two centuries of Spanish rule, Fulay was formally established as atownship on 20 July 1789. It was later renamedAlcala in1843 in honor ofGovernor General Francisco Paula de Alcala.

Alcala is located39.01 kilometers (24.24 miles) from the provincial capital,Tuguegarao, and524.16 kilometers (325.70 miles) from the national capital,Manila.

Alcala is part of thefirst legislative district of Cagayan. In accordance with theLocal Government Code of the Philippines, the municipality is governed by amayor, who serves as the local chief executive, and amunicipal council, which acts as its legislative body. Themayor,vice mayor, andmunicipal councilors are elected directly by the people in elections held everythree years.
