Alberto Mielgo (born 29 April 1979) is a Spanish director, artist, and animator. His accolades include anAcademy Award, fourEmmy Awards[1] and twoAnnie Awards.[2][3] Mielgo was an Art Director atDisney'sTron: Uprising (2013)[4] and made his debut as a director with animated short film "The Witness" (2019) created forNetflix anthology:Love, Death & Robots.[5]
Born and raised in Spain, Mielgo is currently established inLos Angeles, after having worked and lived in various countries of Asia and Europe.[6]
Mielgo currently directs animations,[7] and works as an Art Director.[8] While in London, Mielgo worked as an Art Director for Passion Pictures with Pete Candeland, with whom he worked onThe Beatles: Rock Band andGorillaz projects.[9]
Mielgo's notable early projects includeTim Burton'sCorpse Bride,The Beatles: Rock Band, both parts ofHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows andTron: Uprising byDisney, for which he won in 2013 anEmmy Award[1] and anAnnie Award.[2][10]
Mielgo was hired byDisney as an Art Director for the animated TV seriesTron: Uprising in 2013.[4] The Director ofTron: UprisingCharlie Bean explained that the idea was to create a very special style for the digital show, which was not seen on TV or in the movies.[11] Bean worked closely with Mielgo, character designerRobert Valley, and supervising car designerDaniel Simon. Simon was responsible for the vehicle designs seen inTron: Legacy, including the Light Cycles. Mielgo won the Emmy Primetime Award for Outstanding Art Direction in 2013.[1]
In 2015, Mielgo was a Production Designer/Art Director forSony'sSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and created an early animation test for the film.[12] At first, his main goal was to explore the world, comics, the past of Spider-Man, cinematography, language, style and opportunities.[13] The test animation was never completed – only four shots were completely finished and determined the visual language of the film.[12]
In 2019, Mielgo wrote, designed and directed "The Witness" episode forNetflix animation anthology seriesLove, Death & Robots, which won three Emmys[1] and an Annie award.[3] Mielgo's involvement with the series began when he was approached by its supervising director, Gabriele Pennacchioli, who put him in touch withDavid Fincher andTim Miller.[14]
In 2021 and 2022 Mielgo directed two animated short films;The Windshield Wiper, a personal project focused on his vision of love and relationships, which won theAcademy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the94th Academy Awards, andJibaro forLove, Death & Robots.[15][16]
In 2025 Mielgo wrote and directed a short film doubling as a reveal cinematic for the upcomingextraction shooter gameMarathon developed by studioBungie.[17]
Mielgo won aPrimetime Emmy Award[1] (2013), and anAnnie Award[2] (2013) for his work onDisney'sTron: Uprising as Best Production Designer.[10]
Mielgo won three Emmy Awards (2019)[1] for Best Animated Short, Best Art Direction, Best Animation, and an Annie award (2019)[3] for Best Art Direction of "The Witness" episode forNetflix Animation anthologyLove, Death & Robots.[14]
In March 2022, he won anAcademy Award for Best Animated Short Film forThe Windshield Wiper.[18]
In September 2022, the "Jibaro" episode ofLove, Death, & Robots, written and directed by Mielgo, won the 2022Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.[19][20]
