Alberto Argibay Pazos (born 16 January 1965), known in Spain asAlberto Argibay and in Portugal asAlberto Pazos, is a Spanish formerfootball manager.
Having managed as high as theSegunda División forPontevedra in Spain, he ledBraga,Farense andC.S. Marítimo in brief spells in Portugal'sPrimeira Liga. He was Braga's manager as they lost theTaça de Portugal final in1998.
Born inPontevedra inGalicia, Pazos managed several small clubs in his native region before moving toS.C. Braga of the PortuguesePrimeira Liga as an assistant to compatriotFernando Castro Santos. He succeeded the latter for the second half of the1997–98 season, losing theTaça de Portugalfinal 3–1 toFC Porto.[1]
In 2001, Argibay was hired atS.C. Farense. He was fired on 27 November with the team three points above the relegation zone, despite winning his last match 1–0 againstS.C. Beira-Mar.[2]
Argibay returned to Spain to manageAlicante CF of theSegunda División B in2002–03. On 6 November, his team defeatedLa Liga title holdersValencia CF – managed by his friendRafael Benítez – on penalties in theCopa del Rey.[3]
In 2004, during a break in his career, Argibay watched aPortuguese second tier game involvingC.D. Feirense and recommended their forwardCharles forPontevedra CF. The Brazilian went on to play for over a decade in Spain, including forRC Celta de Vigo.[4]
Argibay was hired by Pontevedra in January 2005, after replacingJosé Aurelio Gay.[4] In June, despite relegation from theSegunda División, his contract was extended for another year.[5] The team reached the playoffs in2006, losing toSevilla Atlético.[6] President Nino Mirón sacked him at 2 a.m. on 22 March 2007, hours after defeatingOntinyent CF to reach theCopa Federación final; his replacement with ten games to go wasJavi Gracia, who had only ever managedVillarreal CF's youth team.[6]
On 8 April 2007, Argibay returned to Portugal's top flight on a contract of undisclosed length at 9th-placedC.S. Marítimo.[7] He earned the team two points from the remaining six games of the season.[8]
Argibay founded ICD Consulting, involved in football agency and investment in the game. In June 2015 his company was interested in buyingReal Avilés Industrial CF, until the club was unexpectedly relegated to theTercera División.[9]
In the2019 Spanish local elections, Argibay joinedEn Marea as a consultant on sporting issues.[10]
