TheAlbert River (Brataualung:Lurt'bit) is aperennial river of theWest Gippsland catchment, located in theSouth Gippsland region of theAustralian state ofVictoria.
The Albert River rises below Madalya, on the eastern slopes of theStrzelecki Ranges, in astate forestry area. The river flows in a highly meanderingcourse generally east by south, joined by theJack River and one minortributary, before reaching itsmouth and emptying into theCorner Inlet ofBass Strait near the town ofPort Albert in theShire of Wellington. The river descends 211 metres (692 ft) over its 39-kilometre (24 mi) course.[6]
TheSouth Gippsland Highway traverses the river, south ofAlberton.[6] The Albert River sub-catchment area is managed by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
In the AboriginalBrataualung language the river is named asLurt'bit, with no clearly defined meaning.[3][4]
The river was visited in 1841 byWilliam Adams Brodribb, an early settler, and named in honour ofPrince Albert.[1][2]
