Alan Charles LovellDL (born 19 November 1953)[1][2] is a British businessman, formerly chief executive of the British construction companyCostain,[3][4] and currently chairman of theEnvironment Agency.

Early life

Lovell is the son of a farmer, and was educated atWinchester College,[1] followed by a degree in classics fromJesus College, Oxford.[5]

Career

He trained as an accountant withPricewaterhouseCoopers from 1976 to 1980, where he was seconded to the City merchant bankKleinwort Benson, and then worked for the electronics companyPlessey from 1980 to 1989.[1]

In 1989, Lovell joined Conder Group, a construction company, as finance director, rising to CEO, but it collapsed in September 1992.[6] He was finance director ofCostain from 1992 to 1995, and its CEO from 1995 to 1997,[6] after which he was FD and CEO ofDunlop Slazenger, and then CEO ofJarvis plc.[6] In July 2006, he was appointed as CEO ofInfinis, which then claimed to be the UK's largest independent solely renewable power company.[1]

In November 2017, Lovell joinedCarillion as a non-executive director, and was described as a "veteran turnaround specialist", a "turnaround expert" and a "company doctor".[4][6][7] Carillion went into liquidation in January 2018.[8]

In July 2019, Lovell was appointed chairman of the financially troubledInterserve group.[9][10]

Lovell has been chairman ofSafestyle UK and of the Association ofLloyd's Members.[4] He is a non-executive director and senior independent director ofSIG plc.[11]In 2022, he became chairman of theEnvironment Agency.[12]

Lovell wasHigh Sheriff ofHampshire 2010–11.[13] He is adeputy lieutenant of Hampshire, former chairman of theMary Rose Trust and former chairman of the board of governors ofWinchester University.[6] He is a Lay Canon and Senior Non Executive Member ofChapter atWinchester Cathedral.[14]

Personal life

Lovell is married to Virginia Weatherill (born 1955), daughter of the former House of Commons speakerBernard Weatherill, and they have three daughters.[1]

He has a longstanding interest in tennis,real tennis and rackets from his schooldays, and was head of the UK's real tennis association in Britain for 13 years.[1]
