Alan Desmond is an Irish consultantgastroenterologist and writer known for his advocacy ofplant-based nutrition. He has argued that a whole food plant-based diet may prevent many diseases.[1]
Desmond studied at the School of Medicine ofUniversity College Cork and atJohn Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.[2] He moved to Devon in 2012. He is certified in gastroenterology and general internal medicine.[3] He is a consultant gastroenterologist for theSouth Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.[4] He works at the Devon Gut Clinic in Mount Stuart Hospital,Torquay and specializes in inflammatory bowel disease.[2][5]
In 2021, Desmond authoredThe Plant-Based Diet Revolution which advocates ahigh-fibre whole food plant-based diet. According to Desmond "there is science showing us that individuals who consume a plant-based diet get tremendous gut microbial benefits and this may be some of the key reasons why people who eat a plant-based diet have lower risk of heart disease, stroke, colorectal cancer and numerous other diseases including Type 2 diabetes."[6] He recommends a whole-food plant-based diet, focused onfruit andvegetables,whole grains,legumes, nuts and seeds.[3]
Desmond is a Fellow of theRoyal College of Physicians and member of theRoyal College of Physicians of Ireland.[4] He was a speaker atVegfest 2019.[7] He has written forThe Telegraph.[8]
He is an Ambassador ofPlant-Based Health Professionals UK.[9]
