Allume Systems was asoftware developer, founded in 1988 by David Schargel and Jonathan Kahn inNew York City asAladdin Systems to develop, publish and distributesoftware forpersonal computers. Aladdin Systems wasincorporated in January 1989.
In April 2004, the company was acquired by PC software publisher International Microcomputer Software Inc. (IMSI).[1][2][3] A few months later in July, the company was forced to change its name from Aladdin Systems as part of a settlement of atrademarklawsuit withAladdin Knowledge Systems.[4][5] In 2005, Allume Systems was acquired bySmith Micro Software from IMSI.[6][7][8]
As Aladdin Systems, they originally developed exclusively forMacintosh, focusing on data compression and management utilities, such as theStuffIt family of compression utilities and theStuffIt InstallerMaker delivery suite, theShrinkWrap disk image utility, and itsSpring Cleaning system optimization utility.[9]
As Aladdin Systems, the company purchased theShrinkWrap disk image utility from Macintosh shareware developerChad Magendanz in 1996.[10][11]
As early as 1995, Allume began to release some elements ofStuffIt toWindows while not releasing the fullStuffIt for Windows until 2000.[9] StuffIt was later ported to bothLinux andSolaris in 2001.[9][12] Under Smith Micro, both Unix products have since been discontinued. By this time, Allume began to publish or distribute a full line ofgraphics,imaging,internet security, and utility software.[citation needed]
In response to the success of the popularmarine aquarium fishtank simulator, they have also released their own line of fish sims known as Aquazone.[13]
