Alvin R. Wiseman (August 25, 1918 – May 17, 1988)[1] was an American cartoonist who worked on bothcomic strips andcomic books, notably his long stint on theDennis the Menace comic books. Wiseman's clean line was an influence on several cartoonists, includingJaime Hernandez,Gilbert Hernandez,Al Gordon, andDaniel Clowes.[citation needed]
After Wiseman worked in advertising, he became an assistant toHank Ketcham onDennis the Menace. Wiseman and writerFred Toole worked on theDennis the Menace comic book from 1953 into the 1960s.[2]
Al's granddaughter, Aliza, claims that many of the characters fromDennis the Menace were created by Al.[3]
He had his own feature,Punky, in theDennis the Menace comic books.[4]
Charley Jones Laugh BookWiseman did covers forCharley Jones Laugh Book, contributed to George Crenshaw'sBelvedere and briefly assisted on theYogi Bear Sunday page .[2] He also did children's books, such asWe Learn to Play (1954).
ADennis the Menace story by Wiseman and Toole was reprinted in theArt Spiegelman andFrançoise Mouly collection,The Toon Treasury of Classic Children's Comics (Abrams, 2009).[5]
