Allen Edward Atkinson (born July 28, 1943) is an American former professionalfootball player who was alinebacker in theAmerican Football League (AFL) and theNational Football League (NFL). He playedhigh school ball atMonsignor Bonner High School. He playedcollege football for theVillanova Wildcats as a lineman. He played professionally in the AFL for theNew York Jets from1965 through1969;[2] then for the NFLJets 1970 through1974. He was a member of the Jets' 1968World Championship team, and anAFL All-Star in1968.

Allen Edward Atkinson was born on July 28, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Allen and Mary (née Connelly) Atkinson. He was one of seven children, having two brothers and four sisters. His father worked as atrolley operator forSEPTA. His brother,Bill Atkinson, became the firstquadripalegic ordained to theCatholic priesthood in 1974, following a sledding accident a decade earlier.[3] In 2017, Bill was named aServant of God, the first step towardscanonization.[4]
