Palestine Square (Arabic:ميدان فلسطين,romanized: Mīdān Falastīn), also known asAl-Saha orAs-Saha (Arabic:الساحة, "the (community) space" or "the square"),[1] is a city square in east-centralGaza City,Palestine, in betweenJamal Abdel Nasser Street andOmar Mukhtar Street. It is the location of a bus station, a taxi station, a fruit market, theAl-Ahli Arab Hospital, and dozens of small shops and vendors. Gaza's municipal headquarters is also located in the square. Palestine Square once was walled when it laid along the southern edge of theOld City, overlooking barley and vegetable farms, olive and almond groves.[2]
During the construction of a shopping centre in 2016 the remnants of a Byzantine church were discovered.[3]
On December 7, 2023, during the fighting in theGaza war, theIsraeli Defense Forces conquered Palestine Square. On November 30, 2023, a week prior to the occupation,Hamas used Palestine Square as the venue for therelease of some of the hostages it was holding.[4][dubious –discuss]
On January 25, 2025, Hamas used the square to stage the release of four Israeli female soldiers held as hostage since October 7, 2023. It was the second round of hostage release as spelled out in the2025 ceasefire deal between Hamas andIsrael.[5]
