Al-Janudiyah (Arabic:ٱلْجَانُودِيَّة,romanized: al-Jānūdīyah; also spelledal-Janoudiya,el-Janudieh,al-Janoodiya) is a town in northernSyria, administratively part of theIdlib Governorate, located northwest ofIdlib along the western banks on theOrontes River inZawiya Mountain.[2] Nearby localities includeShughur Fawqani to the southwest,Jisr al-Shughur 10 kilometers to the south,Bishlamun to the southeast,Kafr Dibbin to the northeast,Yacoubiyah andal-Qunaya to the north, andMaland to the northwest. It is located close to theSyria–Turkey border.
According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics, al-Janudiyah had a population of 5,295 in the 2004 census.[1] The town is also the administrative center of theAl-Janudiyahnahiyah which consists of 13 localities with a combined population of 19,642.[1] The town's inhabitants are predominantlyArabSunni Muslims.[3]
Al-Janudiya contains ancient pottery resembling that of theAmuq region.[4] The geology of the site is marked by softmarl andlimestone.[5]
During aSyrian Army operation againstopposition rebels in Jisr al-Shughur, on 15 June 2011, al-Janudiyah was surrounded by Syrian troops.[6] On 5 September, after clashing with army deserters fleeing towards the nearbyborder with Turkey, armor-backed Syrian troops entered al-Janudiyah, according to witnesses.[7] Later, on 15 September, a boy was reportedly killed by security forces during an anti-government demonstration in the town, according to opposition activists.[2]
Clashes in al-Janudiyah on 11 March left three Syrian Army soldiers and one civilian dead according to theSyrian Observatory for Human Rights.[8] On 1 April a Syrian Army convoy was assaulted by defectors resulting in the deaths of four soldiers and the injuring of eleven others.[9]
In the first days of February 2013,Syrian opposition rebels captured al-Janudiyah and nearbyYakubiyah located on the border withTurkey.[3]
