Al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf ibn Maṭar (786–833CE) was amathematician andtranslator.
Almost nothing is known about his life, except that he was active inBaghdad, then the capital of the ʿAbbāsid Empire.
He was the first author who translatedEuclid'sElements fromGreek intoArabic. His first translation was made forYaḥyā ibn Khālid, theVizier ofCaliphHārūn al-Rashīd. He made a second, improved, more concise translation for theCaliphal-Maʾmūn (813–833). Around 829, he translatedPtolemy'sAlmagest, which at that time had also been translated byHunayn Ibn Ishaq andSahl al-Ṭabarī.
At the beginning of the 12th centuryCE,Adelard of Bath translatedal-Ḥajjāj's version of Euclid'sElements intoLatin.
