Ahmed Moallim Fiqi (Somali:Axmed Macallin Fiqi,Arabic:أحمد معلم الفقهي) is a politician from Somalia who currently serves as defense minister and has served asforeign minister from 2024 to 2025.[1] Formerly a member of theIslamic Courts Union, Fiqi is currently a member of the Somali Federal Parliament. From May 2011 to March 2013, he served as Director of theNational Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). After resigning from the position, he was provisionally replaced byAbdikarin Dahir.[2][3][4]

In 2015, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi run for the office ofPresident of Galmudug State.[5] Ahmed lost to his contenderAbdikarim Hussein Guled[6] Guled won by 49 to 40 votes over former Intel. Chief Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.

Early life and education

Fiqi was born in 1971 inGalkayo, Somalia, His family hailed from theSa'adHabargidir clan. Fiqi took his primary and secondary school inMogadishu. In 1988, after his two-yearMilitary service he was admitted for the College of Law at theSomali National University. Fiqi didn't complete his studies due to theSomali Civil War. He then wentSudan and studied agriculture at theUniversity of Khartoum.[7] Fiqi is a graduate ofInternational Islamic University Malaysia.

Fiqi speaksSomali, Arabic, and English.

Political career

Ahmed Fiqi started his political career during theIslamic Courts Union. He was very close friend of former ICU leaderSharif Sheikh Ahmed. Later whenSharif Sheikh Ahmed become president,[8] Fiqi served as the Somali ambassador to Sudan from 2010 to 2011. He was served as Director General of theNational Intelligence and Security Agency and Presidential Candidate for theGalmudug State of Somalia.

In early 2015, Ahmed Fiqi co-foundedDaljir Party withSharif Sheikh Ahmed andHassan Moalim.[9] Later Ahmed Fiqi run for the office ofPresident of Galmudug State.[5] He lost to his contenderAbdikarim Hussein Guled[6] Guled won by 49 to 40 votes over former Intelligence Chief Ambassador Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.

On 28 November 2016, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi was elected[10] as member of theFederal Parliament of Somalia fromGalmudug inAdado, Somalia.

Fiqi'sDaljir Party formed a coalition with former Somali PresidentHassan Mohamud'sPeace and Development Party. They launched[11]Union for Peace and Development Party in October 2018.

Foreign minister (2024–2025)

On 7 April 2024, Fiqi was appointedMinister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia.[12]
