Ahmad Toukan[a] (Arabic:أحمد طوقان,romanized: Aḥmad Ṭūqān; 15 August 1903 – 5 January 1981[1]) was aJordanian political leaderof Palestinian descent. He was briefly the 20thPrime Minister of Jordan from 26 September 1970 to 28 October 1970, duringa crackdown that drove thePLO guerillas out of Jordan.[2]
Tuqan was born inNablus, then part of theOttoman Empire.[3] He was the eldest brother ofIbrahim Touqan andFadwa Touqan, both of whom were poets.[citation needed]
He was on the staff of theArab College in Palestine during theBritish Mandatory period.[3]
He died in Jordan on 5 January 1981, aged 77, after a prolonged illness.[1] The Ahmad Toukan School inAmman is named in his honor.
