Ahez is a French vocal group fromCarhaix,Brittany, consisting of Marine Lavigne, Sterenn Diridollou and Sterenn Le Guillou.[1] The triorepresented France in theEurovision Song Contest 2022 together withAlvan with the song "Fulenn".[2]
Diridollou, Lavigne and Le Guillou met during their studies atDiwan secondary school inCarhaix,Brittany, where they practised the traditional singing stylekan ha diskan.[1][3] The name "Ahez" comes fromKer Ahez, a popular etymology for theBreton name of Carhaix (Karaez), andAhes, a Breton mythological figure.[4] The group started performing atfest-noz festivals in 2018, and took part in the 2018 edition of theInter-Celtic Festival of Lorient with the band Eben.[5]
In the summer of 2021, they met singer and producerAlvan in a bar inRennes.[1] Together, they participated inEurovision France, c'est vous qui décidez ! 2022 ("Eurovision France, you decide ! 2022"), the French national selection for theEurovision Song Contest 2022, with the song "Fulenn".[5] They went on to win the competition, winning both the jury vote andtelevote.[2] "Fulenn" was the first Eurovision entry to be sung in Breton since1996.[6]
At the end of 2022, the group collaborated with the traditional Asturian group Algaire on the song in Asturian "Llume", and wrote a verse in the Breton language. A clip was released in January 2023. In August the two groups sing together at theFestival Interceltique de Lorient 2023.
