Agua Dulce (pronunciation) (Spanish for "Sweet Water")[3] is anunincorporated community andcensus-designated place (CDP)[4] inLos Angeles County, California, United States.[2] It lies at an elevation of 2,526 feet (770 m),[2] northeast ofSanta Clarita. The community had a population of 3,451 at the2020 census[5] and covers a geographic area of about 23 square miles (59 km2). Agua Dulce is on thePacific Crest Trail.[6] TheZIP code is 91390 (shared withGreen Valley and far northern Santa Clarita), and the area code is661.

Geography

Agua Dulce is located alongCalifornia State Route 14, halfway betweenSanta Clarita andPalmdale, and 45 miles (72 km) north ofLos Angeles, in theSierra Pelona Valley region ofSouthern California.Vasquez Rocks is located in Agua Dulce. ThePacific Crest Trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada, goes through Agua Dulce.

History

TheTataviam Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants.[7]

On June 1, 2021, a shooting occurred atLos Angeles County Fire Department Station 81 in Agua Dulce. Firefighter Jonathan Tatone shot and killed a fellow firefighter and wounded a fire captain.[8][9]

2020 census

The2020 United States census reported that Agua Dulce had a population of 3,451. The population density was 151.0 inhabitants per square mile (58.3/km2). The racial makeup of Agua Dulce was 70.5%White, 1.4%African American, 0.9%Native American, 1.8%Asian, 0.1%Pacific Islander, 9.4% fromother races, and 15.9% from two or more races.Hispanic or Latino of any race were 25.2% of the population.[28]

The whole population lived in households. There were 1,238 households, out of which 26.3% included children under the age of 18, 59.5% were married-couple households, 6.4% werecohabiting couple households, 16.2% had a female householder with no partner present, and 17.9% had a male householder with no partner present. 19.0% of households were one person, and 8.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.79.[28] There were 933families (75.4% of all households).[29]

The age distribution was 17.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% aged 18 to 24, 19.5% aged 25 to 44, 33.2% aged 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.2 males.[28]

There were 1,303 housing units at an average density of 57.0 units per square mile (22.0 units/km2), of which 1,238 (95.0%) were occupied. Of these, 86.4% were owner-occupied, and 13.6% were occupied by renters.[28]

In 2023, the US Census Bureau estimated that the median household income was $124,268, and theper capita income was $60,482. About 4.3% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line.[30]

In theCalifornia State Legislature, Agua Dulce is inthe 23rd senatorial district, represented byRepublican Suzette Martinez Valladares,[36] and inthe 34th Assembly district, represented byRepublican Tom Lackey.[37]

In theUnited States House of Representatives, Agua Dulce is inCalifornia's 27th congressional district, represented byDemocrat George T. Whitesides.[38]

Filming location

Vasquez Rocks

Vasquez Rocks has long been used as a popular filming location by theHollywood movie industry, most notablyThe Flintstones movie,Mel Brooks'Blazing Saddles,The Invaders episode "The Saucer", and theStar Trek episode "Arena." The 1971 movieDuel filmed extensively in the area, as was the western filmMore Dead Than Alive. Other films shot in the area areRat Race,Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey andThe Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle. The History channel shoots the popular reality TV show "Top Shot" in the hills and canyons on the north side of the valley.Reno 911 has filmed in locations off of Soledad Canyon Road.

The Agua Dulce area has played host to music video shoots, including those forTom Petty and the Heartbreakers "You Got Lucky",Bloodhound Gang's "Your Only Friends Are Make-Believe",Weird Al Yankovic's "I Love Rocky Road", and variousNike commercials. L.A. based rockers and "Rat Pack" recording artist "Roxanne" filmed "Super Bad" at the Diamond View Ranch in Agua Dulce.

Vasquez Rocks got its name from the famous banditTiburcio Vásquez who used them as a hideout.

Most recently, Agua Dulce was used as the primary setting forJordan Peele’s 2022 horror sci-fi filmNope. The main characters in the film arehorse wranglers that often work on movie shoots that happen around Agua Dulce.

Transportation

Agua Dulce has ageneral aviation airport known asAgua Dulce Airpark. The Airpark and surrounding area was the location for theABC game show101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow which premiered on June 21, 2011.
