Agios Georgios (Greek:Άγιος Γεώργιος) orSan Tzortzis is a Greek uninhabited island in the entry ofSaronic Gulf. It is the largest uninhabited island of theSaronic Islands with an area of 4.3 km2.[1] Administratively, it is part of the municipality ofHydra.[2]
In antiquity the island was namedBelbina (Ancient Greek:Βέλβινα) and is mentioned byHerodotus in a dialogue betweenThemistocles and his political opponent Timodemos fromAfidnes.[3] There was also atown of the same name on the island.Though some scholars have proposed that Agios Georgios should be identified as the ancientPsyttaleia which was involved in theBattle of Salamis, the consensus remains with the island that has long been known as Lipsokoutali, now renamed Psyttaleia.[4]
In 2016 a 73 MWwind farm was built on the island byTerna Energy. It delivers about 250 GWh electricity per year to Athens.[1][5][6] Administratively, the island has belonged to the municipality ofHydra since 1834. In recent years, the municipality ofLavreotiki challenged the ownership of the island (and its associated wind farm revenues), however a 2017 legal judgement reaffirmed Hydra's ownership.[7]
