Agência Brasil (ABr.) is a nationwidepublicnews agency, run by theBrazilian government. The agency was founded in 1990 and is part of public media corporationEmpresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), created in 2007 to unite two government media enterprisesRadiobrás and TVE (Televisão Educativa). It publishes under theCC-BY license.[1]
ABr is one of the most importantBrazilian news agencies, that feeds thousands of regional newspapers and websites throughout Brazil but also national media outlets likeEstadão,O Globo,Folha de S.Paulo,UOL andTerra and according to itsCEO, reaches more than 9 million people each month.[2] Agência Brasil has a team dedicated in translating journalistic content to English and Spanish. The Agency also works with public news entities, such asLusa,Xinhua andTelam to produce and carry out international information. In 2020, the agency becameReuters partner, which made the flow of international news common in the content produced by thevehicle.

National parties such asPartido dos Trabalhadores (PT),Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL),Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB) andPartido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT) presented projects, defending theconstitutional right to information, a study is still to happen by theBrazilian Development Bank (BNDES). According toRoni Baksys (CEO), the company has 34 properties not being used.Eletrobras was also included in the program, at the occasion.[5]
Thepublic company is dependent on theNational Treasury and has received, by 2020,R$88.5 million (2020) (US$16.42 million), the agency also receivedR$389.1 million (2020) (US$72.19 million) from theContribuição para o Fomento à Radiodifusão Pública (Contribution to the Promotion of Public Broadcasting,in English) andR$65.8 million (2020) (US$12.21 million) in own-source revenue, with expenses totalingR$543.4 million (2020) (US$100.82 million) in that year.[6] Theprivatization would result in, approximately,R$400 million (2020) (US$74.21 million) in annual savings to theUnion Budget.[7]
