Afro-Omanis areOmani people ofAfricanZanj heritage. Most live in the coastal cities ofOman, with many speakingArabic and adhering toIslam. Their origins date back to the time of theArab slave trade and eraSlavery in Oman, and whenZanzibar was a part of theOmani Empire.[1][2]
Many Afro-Omanis are descendants of slaves, mainly trafficked via theIndian Ocean slave trade and theZanzibar slave trade from theSwahili coast. On 23 July 1970, the Sultan of OmanSaid bin Taimur was deposed in the1970 Omani coup d'état and his successorQaboos bin Said initiated a number of reforms, of which the abolition ofslavery in Oman was one.[3]
Some Afro-Omanis are still able to maintain rituals related to healing that are of Zanj origin. The languages used in these rituals areSwahili andArabic.[4]
