TheAdmirable class was one of the largest and most successful classes ofminesweepers ordered by theUnited States Navy during World War II. Typically, minesweepers detected and removednaval mines before the rest of the fleet arrived, thereby ensuring safe passage for the larger ships. They were also charged withanti-submarine warfare (ASW) duties with rear-mounteddepth charge racks and a forward-firingHedgehog antisubmarinemortar. Their job was essential to the safety and success of U.S. naval operations during World War II and theKorean War. These minesweepers were also employed aspatrol vessel andconvoy escorts. The only remaining ship of this class is located at Freedom Park, Omaha, NE.

ThePCE-842-class of patrol craft escorts was based on theAdmirable-class design.[1]

Service in other Navies

[edit]

As a part ofProject Hula – a secret 1945 program that transferred 149 U.S. Navy ships to theSoviet Navy atCold Bay, Territory of Alaska, in anticipation of theSoviet Union joining thewar against Japan – the U.S. Navy transferred 24Admirable-class minesweepers to the Soviet Navy between May and August 1945. At least some of them saw action in theSoviet offensive against Japanese forces inNortheast Asia in August 1945. The Soviet Union never returned them to the United States.[2]

After World War II, the United States transferredAdmirable-class minesweepers to theRepublic of China Navy, the Republic of China'sChinese Maritime Customs Service, theRepublic of Korea Navy, theRepublic of Vietnam Navy, and theDominican,Mexican,Myanmar, andPhilippine navies.

USS Hazard survives as amuseum ship on dry land inOmaha, Nebraska.USS Inaugural was a museum ship on theMississippi River inSt. Louis, until she sank during theGreat Flood of 1993.USS Scuffle was scuttled off the coast ofCozumel, Mexico in 1999. It is now a popular site forscuba diving.
