Adeel Hamayun Akhtar (born 18 September 1980) is a British actor. He is known for his role in television drama filmMurdered by My Father, for which he won theBritish Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 2017.

He is also known forUtopia,Ali & Ava,Showtrial, andSherwood (2022), for which he received theBritish Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actor. He won theOutstanding Supporting Performance at theChildren's and Family Emmy Awards for his role inSweet Tooth in 2023, and he is also known for his role in satiristChris Morris's debut feature filmFour Lions (2010).

Early life and education

Adeel Humayan Akhtar[citation needed] was born inHammersmith,London to a Pakistani father and a Kenyan mother.[1][failed verification]

He was educated atCheltenham College[1] He completed a degree in law atOxford Brookes University, but decided to follow his passion and change to acting, training at theActors Studio Drama School inNew York City.[2] While travelling to New York to audition for the New School, Akhtar was detained and questioned by the FBI at New York'sJFK Airport after a tip-off from security staff atHeathrow Airport in London, who had mistaken him for a suspect on a security watchlist circulated after theSeptember 11 attacks.[3] He says that this experience has informed the acting roles which he has chosen.[4]

Career

Akhtar's first major role was as the bumbling Muslimextremist Faisal inChris Morris's filmFour Lions.[5] Other comedic performances include Gupta inTheAngelos Epithemiou Show,[6] Maroush inThe Dictator[6] andSmee inJoe Wright 'sPan.[7]

Akhtar has also won acclaim for his dramatic performances: in 2015, he was nominated for aBAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his 2014 role as Wilson Wilson onChannel 4'sUtopia.[8] He played shopkeeper Ahmed alongsideToby Jones in the BBC mini-seriesCapital,[9] and DS Ira King in the BBC'sRiver.[10] ReviewingRiver inThe Daily Telegraph, Michael Hogan praised Akhtar's acting.[11]

In 2016, Akhtar appeared as Shahzad in the BBC one-off dramaMurdered by My Father. He won the2017BAFTA award for Lead Actor for this role,[12] the first non-white actor to do so. In 2017, he also took part in the American romantic comedy filmThe Big Sick, playing the role of the protagonist's brother, Naveed.[13] He appeared as Rob Singhal in the acclaimed BBC miniseries based onJohn le Carré'sThe Night Manager.[14] In 2019, Akhtar appeared as Billy in theBBC Three series,Back to Life, written byDaisy Haggard andLaura Solon, returning in 2021 for the second series.[15]

In 2024, Akhtar appeared as Sam Malik in the second series of BBC dramaShowtrial.[16]

In January 2026, Akhtar was featured on theBBC Radio 4 programmeDesert Island Discs.[17]
