Ada,Ela Ada,Patholi, Genasele, or Yelaiyappam[1] is anIndian sweet and traditionalKerala, Karnataka and Konkandelicacy. It can be seen even in parts ofTamil Nadu as well, consisting ofrice parcels encased in a dough made ofrice flour, with sweet fillings, steamed inbanana leaf and served as an evening snack or as part ofbreakfast. It is a snack made out of rawrice flour,sugar orjaggery and gratedcoconut. It is usually prepared onOnam.[2]

Poovada is prepared in the tip end of theplantain leaf as theNivedyam[3] forOnam, into this ada goes, with thecoconut filling, a sprinkling of theThumbapoo (a white flowerLeucas aspera),[4][unreliable source?] making it more auspicious.[5][unreliable source?] Sometimesbanana is also added in the filing which is coconut-jaggery-banana filling. SpicyOttada is a unique breakfast withmaida andrice flour as the main ingredients. It can be also made withoutmaida, but using therice flour alone and it is not steamed instead cooked onTava or flame.[6] Sometimes the fillings inside ada would beChakkavaratti (Jackfruit Jam).[7][unreliable source?] Ada is also given asPrasadam (Sacred Food) todevotees attemples inKerala.[8]
