There was a series of battles that took place in 1697 when the Venetian fleet, underBartolomeo Contarini, hunted down the Turkish fleet in theAegean Sea.

The actions took place on 6 July nearLemnos, on 1 September betweenAndros andEuboea, and on 20 September south of Euboea. Both sides had about twenty-six battleships as well as several smaller vessels. Casualties forVenice were seventy-one killed and 163 wounded in the first battle and 191 killed and 516 wounded in the last.
