Achenheim (French pronunciation:[axənaim];Alsatian:Àchene) is acommune in theBas-Rhindepartment andGrand Estregion of north-easternFrance.[3]

The village, which is in thearrondissement of Strasbourg and thecanton of Lingolsheim lies close to theCanal de la Bruche and to the departmental road connectingSoultz-les-Bains toStrasbourg.

History

The oldest traces of human habitation inAlsace – tools used byHomo erectus in thePaleolithic era some 700,000 years ago – have been found inloess deposits at Achenheim.

In 1264 the village was burnt down by forces fromStrasbourg during the war between the city and its bishop, Walter de Geroldseck.
