TheAcademy of Drama and Film in Budapest (Hungarian:Színház- és Filmművészeti Egyetem,SZFE) is an educational institution founded in 1865 inBudapest,Hungary. It became a university in 2000 and the name was changed toUniversity of Theatre and Film Arts.[2]
On 31 August 2020, the university's management resigned in protest at the imposition of a government-appointedboard of trustees which they saw as limiting the university'sautonomous status.[3] A group of students took over the school building in protest and barricaded themselves inside.[4] Several artists signed an open letter in defense of the autonomy of the school.[5]
In 2021, the University announced that its film institute would operate under the nameZsigmond Vilmos Institute for Motion Picture, housed in a building on Szentkirályi Street within the formerDuna Television headquarters in Buda. Its theater institute, renamed theSinkovits Imre Institute for the Theatrical Arts, and theoretical studies institute, renamed theAntal Németh Institute of Drama Theory, are housed in the formerKárolyi Palace on Szentkirályi Street and Rákóczi Street.[6]
