Abu al Abyad ( Arabic :جزيرة أبو الأبيض ) (formerly Abu al Jirab) is the largest of about 200islands along the coast of theUnited Arab Emirates.
The island is situated in the emirate ofAbu Dhabi. Its area is 306 square kilometres (118 sq mi). Settlements on the island include Al Jirab, Bū Līfīyāt, and Jazirah.[1] The eastern section of the island is called Al Jirab (24°11′25″N53°53′46″E / 24.19028°N 53.89611°E /24.19028; 53.89611),[2] while the western section is called Muqaysiţ (24°11′20″N53°45′08″E / 24.18889°N 53.75222°E /24.18889; 53.75222), and the westernmost point of the island is known as Ra's Muqay (24°10′04″N53°37′24″E / 24.16778°N 53.62333°E /24.16778; 53.62333).[3]
The island has been designated anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because it supports populations ofwestern reef egrets,crab-plovers andSaunders's terns.[4]
