Abhidhamma Day (Burmese:အဘိဓမ္မာနေ့), also known asAbhidhamma Divas inIndia, is aTheravadaBuddhist tradition celebrated primarily inMyanmar[1] andIndia.[2][3] It is also celebrated by someBuddhists in Indonesia.[4][5][6] Abhidhamma Day celebratesGautama Buddha's descent fromTāvatiṃsa heaven after teaching his mother theAbhidhamma.[7][8]
It is celebrated on the full moon of the seventh month[1] of the Burmese lunar year which starts in April, and coincides with the end of the (first) Rains Retreat and thePavāraṇa ceremony. The seventh month corresponds to October.[9] The 2024 date for this event is October 17th.
