Abadan Island is an island in thedelta of theShatt al-Arab inIran and is the site of the city ofAbadan. The island hostedAnglo-Iranian Oil Company'sAbadan Refinery,[1] around which Iranian Prime MinisterMohammad Mossadegh's nationalization movement was centered.[2] Iran and the Ottomans had long had competing claims over Ābādān Island, which was ceded to Iran by Turkey in 1847.[3] It has a population of ~100,000 but its exact population is unknown.
