Aaron Perry Taylor-Johnson (Johnson; born 13 June 1990) is an English actor.[1] His accolades include aGolden Globe Award, in addition to nominations for twoBritish Academy Film Awards and aBritish Independent Film Award.

As achild actor, Taylor-Johnson performed in films includingShanghai Knights (2003),The Illusionist (2006), andAngus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008). He had his breakthrough performance asJohn Lennon in the biopicNowhere Boy (2009), directed bySam Taylor-Wood whom he married in 2012, adding her surname. He gained recognition for his portrayal of thetitle character inKick-Ass (2010) and its sequelKick-Ass 2 (2013), as well as performances in the crime thrillerSavages (2012), period dramaAnna Karenina (2012), and monster filmGodzilla (2014).

Taylor-Johnson next portrayed theMarvel Cinematic Universe characterPietro Maximoff inAvengers: Age of Ultron (2015). For playing apsychopathic drifter in the thriller filmNocturnal Animals (2016), he won theGolden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has since appeared in the action filmsTenet (2020),Bullet Train (2022), andThe Fall Guy (2024), as well as starring roles in the horror filmsNosferatu (2024) and28 Years Later (2025).

Early life

Aaron Perry Johnson was born inHigh Wycombe on 13 June 1990.[2][3][4] His father, Robert, was a civil engineer and his mother, Sarah, "stayed at home [and] worked odd jobs here and there so [they] could get by."[4][5][6] He has a sister named Gemma, who later had a small role in his filmTom & Thomas (2002).[7] Johnson isJewish.[8]

He went toHolmer Green Senior School and attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, studying drama, tap, jazz, acrobatics, and singing.[9][10] He left school at 15.[11][12]

Career

Beginnings and rise to fame (1999–2015)

Johnson began acting at the age of six. On stage, he appeared in a London production ofWilliam Shakespeare'sMacbeth, playing the son ofMacduff alongsideRufus Sewell, who playedMacbeth, in 1999.[13] He appeared inArthur Miller'sAll My Sons in 2000. His television roles have included Niker in the 2004BBC adaptation of the novelFeather Boy, Aaron inDanny Brocklehurst'sITV1 serialTalk to Me, and Owen Stephens inNearly Famous.[3] In 2003, Johnson appeared as a youngCharlie Chaplin inShanghai Knights alongsideJackie Chan andOwen Wilson, with Chaplin depicted as a member of a London gang of street hooligans. That year, he guest starred in "Fatal Consequences", a special live episode of the ITV dramaThe Bill. In 2006, he appeared inThe Illusionist, appearing in the early flashback scenes asEdward Norton's character, Eduard Abramovicz, as a teenager. The scenes show the young Eduard as he first learns magic. To do this, Johnson had to learn how to perform the ball trick that his character performs. He learned how to balance the egg on the stick, although that was mechanically effected.[14] Also in 2006, he starred in the filmThe Thief Lord as Prosper.

Johnson appeared asJohn Lennon in the 2009 biographical filmNowhere Boy, directed bySam Taylor-Wood, whom he later married. His performance won him theEmpire Award for Best Newcomer, and he was nominated forYoung British Performer of the Year by theLondon Film Critics' Circle. In 2010, Johnson appeared asDavid "Dave" Lizewski/Kick-Ass, the lead character inKick-Ass, based on thesuperhero comic book of the same name by Scottish writerMark Millar.[15][16] His performance inKick-Ass saw him nominated for theBAFTA Rising Star Award. He has also appeared as the central character, William, inHideo Nakata'sChatroom.[3] In December 2010, Johnson joined the cast ofAlbert Nobbs as a replacement forOrlando Bloom.[17] Johnson starred inR.E.M.'s 2011 music video "Überlin", which was directed by his then-fiancée.[18]

In 2012, Taylor-Johnson played Count Vronsky inAnna Karenina. Later that year, he starred as Ben inOliver Stone'sSavages.HitFix film critic Drew McWeeny was positive of the bond between Johnson and co-starTaylor Kitsch, which "seems not only credible but lived in and authentic throughout the film," and noted the evolution in maturity of Johnson sinceKick-Ass.[19] Taylor-Johnson starred in theGodzilla reboot, released in May 2014.[20][21] Taylor-Johnson playedQuicksilver inAvengers: Age of Ultron (2015), the sequel to 2012'sThe Avengers, as part of theMarvel Cinematic Universe.[22] Taylor-Johnson first appeared as the character in a post-credits scene of the filmCaptain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).[23] The role reunited him withElizabeth Olsen, who played his wife inGodzilla.[21][22]

Career progression (2016–present)

In 2016, he played Ray, a menacing Texan, inTom Ford's thrillerNocturnal Animals. For the role, he won theGolden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. Taylor-Johnson also became first Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor winner sinceRichard Benjamin who did not receive anAcademy Award nomination. For the role, he received a nomination for theBAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2017, he played an American soldier inDoug Liman's thrillerThe Wall,[24] and in 2018, he appeared inOutlaw King, a British-American historical action drama aboutRobert the Bruce and the Wars of Scottish Independence.

In 2020, Taylor-Johnson had a supporting role inChristopher Nolan's filmTenet.[25] In 2022, he appeared inDavid Leitch'sBullet Train, an action-thriller film based on the novelMariabītoru byKōtarō Isaka.[26] In 2023, he appeared in a commercial forArmani's Acqua di Giò fragrance, shot inTelašćica Nature Park.[27] He reunited with Leitch in the 2024 action filmThe Fall Guy.[28] Also in 2024, Taylor-Johnson played anotherMarvel character inKraven the Hunter, as part ofSony's Spider-Man Universe.[29] He featured inRobert Eggers' horror filmNosferatu.[30]

Taylor-Johnson starred in28 Years Later, a sequel to the 2002 film28 Days Later, directed byDanny Boyle.[31]

Personal life

Johnson met filmmakerSam Taylor-Wood in 2008 when he auditioned for her filmNowhere Boy. He was 18 and she was 41 at the time.[32][33][34] They began dating soon after filming wrapped and became engaged in October 2009.[35][36] Johnson stated he asked her to marry him a year after they met.[37]

They married in the chapel atBabington House on 21 June 2012.[38] They changed both their surnames to Taylor-Johnson.[39] They have two daughters, born in 2010 and 2012, and Johnson is stepfather to Sam's two daughters from her previous marriage.[40]

Taylor-Johnson was named one ofGQ's 50 best dressed British men in 2015.[41] In a 2019 interview withGQ Australia, he defined his style as "elegant" and "timeless".[42]

Taylor-Johnson lives with his wife and their two daughters on a farm nearBruton, Somerset, and he spends his time vegetable farming.[43]
